information processing
The methods by which we take in, analyze, store and retrieve material
Step 1; Sensory Memory
Information brought in from our senses
Iconic Memory
Very brief visual memories, only seconds
ex; seeing people in the hallway on the way to class
Acoustic Memory
Very brief auditory memories, only seconds
ex; hearing voices in the cafeteria
Step 2; Short Term Memory (STM) / Working Memory
Memory system that retains information for a few seconds to a few minutes —> for as long as your are focused on the info
Step 3; Long Term Memory (LTM)
Memory system that retains information for hours, days, weeks, months or years
ex; the colors of the rainbow
Step 4; Retrieval
The process of bringing information from LTM back into STM to be used
ex; what is the occipita lobe used for?
Schema
An organized and systematic approach to answering questions or solving problems
Follows a 6 Step Process
ex; A ¨restaurant schema¨ tells you to expect a menu, food, and a bill
6 Step Process
Process words in the question
Match the question to rough categories of information to make a connection
Within category, search to find representation of grandma in her house
Hold that representation in consciousness of where she herself if when the question is asked
Find all of the connections (streets, directions) b/w where she is now and where grandma is located, answer the question step by step
Block out extraneous information (ADHD)
