Hiatal Hernia
Caused by diaphragm weakness causing the upper stomach to protrude through the diaphragm. Asymptomatic unless presented with GERDs. Can cause ischemia. Risk Factors: Age (50+), Obesity, Pregnancy, Chronic Vomiting, Weight Training
GERD Risk Factors and Treatments
RF: Obesity, Alcohol, Smoking, Pregnancy, Fatty foods, Chocolate, Hiatal Hernia
Treatment: Acid-Suppressors (Protein Pump), Low fat Diet, Staying upright for 2-3 hours post-eating, sleep in an elevated position.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Weakened esophageal sphincter that prevents it from closing, causing backflow of stomach acid to the throat. Heartburn 30-60 minutes after eating that worsens when bending over or lying down. Can lead to respiratory issues and throat cancer.
