Egypt
A civilization that developed along the Nile River around 3000BC where the Israelites eventually settled and were later enslaved.
Joseph
The great-grandson of Abraham who rescued his family from famine and helped them settle in the land of Egypt.
Exodus
The second book of the Old Testament which recounts the Israelites' enslavement in Egypt and their escape to the Promised Land.
Saint Peter Claver
A Spanish Jesuit missionary who ministered to enslaved people in Cartagena, calling himself a "slave to the Negroes forever."
September 9
The feast day of Saint Peter Claver.
Hebrews
Another name for the Israelites, the descendants of Joseph's family who prospered in Egypt before being enslaved by a new Pharaoh.
Jochebed
The Hebrew woman who gave birth to Moses and hid him in a basket among the reeds to save him from Pharaoh's order to kill baby boys.
Moses
The man adopted by Pharaoh's daughter who was later chosen by God at a burning bush to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.
I AM
The sacred name of God revealed to Moses at the burning bush, signifying that God is the only true God.
Plagues
A series of disasters—including the Nile turning to blood, frogs, lice, and darkness—sent to Egypt because Pharaoh would not release the Israelites.
Passover
The event where Hebrew families marked their doors with lamb's blood so the plague of death would pass over their homes.
Manna
White, honey-tasting breadlike flakes provided by God to feed the Israelites in the desert after they left Egypt.
Ten Commandments
The laws given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai to guide the people's relationship with God and others.
Ark of the Covenant
A gold and wood box built by the Israelites to hold the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments.
Ner Tamid
An "eternal light" or continuously burning lamp used originally in synagogues to represent God's eternal covenant.
Sadducees
A group of people during the time of Jesus who did not believe in everlasting life or the resurrection of the dead.
Feeding of the Five Thousand
A miracle where Jesus fed a crowd of approximately 5000 men with only 5 loaves and 2 fish, resulting in 12 baskets of leftovers.
Cardinals
The high-ranking church officials who meet at the Vatican to pray and vote for the election of a new pope.
Black Smoke
The signal produced by burning chemicals with voting papers to show that the cardinals have not yet elected a new pope.
White Smoke
The signal indicating that a new pope has been successfully elected by the cardinals.
Pope Francis
The first pope from Latin America, formerly known as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, who was elected in March of 2013.
Sermon on the Mount
The teaching where Jesus delivered the Beatitudes and the Golden Rule, revealing the fullness of God's law as a law of love.
