Molar
Which salivary gland is the additional major one found in cats, and was formerly called the mucosal bulge? The other major ones are the parotid, zygomatic, mandibular, and sublingual.
Caruncle
The sublingual what, also called the sublingual papilla, is the opening for the sublingual and mandibular salivary gland/duct?
Papilla
The parotid what is the opening of the parotid salivary gland/duct, found aboral to the upper 4th premolar?
Zygomatic
The major and minor ducts of which salivary gland are found aboral to the parotid papilla and behind the last upper molar?
Minor
Which salivary glands in dogs and cats are not visible to the eye but are found along the labial, lingual, and palatal mucosa, draining directly into the oral cavity?
Honey
A swelling of the cervical/submandibular salivary gland is called a what cyst? Needle aspiration, radiographs, contrast, ultrasound, and other diagnostics can be done, with abscess and neoplasia being the main differentials.
No
Are radiographs or contrast studies usually helpful for diagnosing salivary gland problems, besides determining their involvement in larger problems?
Sublingual
Which salivary gland is the one most commonly affected, if any of them is affected with a problem?
Ranula
What is the term for a swelling of the salivary duct/gland under the tongue?
Mucocele
Treatment of a salivary what condition often requires surgical removal fo the gland (definitive treatment) or drainage of the accumulated saliva in conjunction with definite treatment? Aspiration or marsupialization of a ranula is possible, while lancing of this condition may be needed to relieve respiratory distress.
Sialoadenectomy
What procedure refers to removal of a swollen/blocked salivary gland? It can be done from a lateral approach with the patient in lateral recumbency, and an incision made into the mandibular salivary gland, in this case. The mandibular gland is too closely associated with the sublingual gland to allow excision of only the sublingual, so they are both usually removed.
Marsupialization
What procedure is done by suturing the inner lining of the mucocele to the oral mucosa, to help treat a ranula? This refers to a full-thickness portion of sublingual mucosa being removed to allow continue intraoral drainage of accumulating saliva. It may not solve the problem as the only treatment, as the cavity is a pseudocyst, and can potentially lead to granulation and blockage of the drainage site. Removal of the affected gland is preferred to this procedure.
Excellent
What is the prognosis for salivary mucocele after removal of the mandibular/sublingual salivary glands? Recurrence is less than 5%, unless inadequate excision and failure of removal of the entire polystomatic sublingual gland has occurred.
Canine
Necrotizing sialometaplasia is a condition in which species, which refers to coagulative necrosis or infarction of the mandibular gland, including ptyalism, lip bumps, dysphagia, and tenderness, affecting terrier breeds most often? Anticonvulsant medication like phenobarbitol is indicated. Acinar proliferation is not usually seen, and the adjacent salivary glands are usually normal.
Sialadenosis
What canine salivary gland condition is a non-inflammatory, non-neoplastic usually bilateral enlargement of the mandibular glands, less common in the zygomatic gland? There will be regional inflammation and exopthalmos but no pain. Phenobarbital is used for treatment, with rapid response.
