Social cohesion definition and importance in Aus
members of a community work together peacefully, respecting law and shared values, creating stability, trust and fairness, and this is important in Australia because it ensures peace, inclusivity (fights exclusion), creates belonging, promotes trust.
Characteristics
shared values and norms, respect for rule for law, equal rights protected, low discrimination, community trust and participation, access to justice.
E.g in community
everyone comes together to play in the same sports team to win and when members of the community come together to change a local law like parking hours.

discrimination + racism, economic inequality - poverty, social isolation – unemployment + social fragmentation , misinformation + media influence and weak legal institutions
how does law help maintain social coehsion
Laws helps maintain because they are a set of rules (which are made to keep people safe, hep them live fair and good lives, and provide justice) that everybody must follow and courts helps maintain it because they help resolve disputes fairly, give sanction to deter harmful behaviour, and people’s rights are protected by legislation which upholds social cohesion to protect it.
Who imposes/makes laws and what is the purspose
Laws are made/imposed by parliament, courts and police to keep people safe, help them live fair and good lives and provide justice which fosters unity and facilitates a higher level of social cohesion.
