CRITERIA FOR MAXIMAL TEST
Parameters that must be met for a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test, such as RER >1.05-1.15, workload >80% predicted, exercise duration of 8-12 min, and heart rate exceeding 80% (some guidelines >90%).
RER
Respiratory Exchange Ratio, a measure of the ratio of carbon dioxide produced to oxygen consumed during exercise.
pVO2
Percent predicted VO2, indicating an individual's oxygen consumption capacity compared to a predicted value.
O2 pulse
The amount of oxygen consumed per heartbeat, calculated by VO2/HR.
AT
Anaerobic Threshold, which represents the exercise intensity at which lactate starts to accumulate in the blood.
VO2/work
The ratio of oxygen consumption to workload, typically expressed in mL/min/W.
SpO2
Peripheral oxygen saturation, the percentage of oxygen-saturated hemoglobin in the blood.
VE/VCO2
The ratio of minute ventilation (VE) to carbon dioxide production (VCO2), used to assess ventilation efficiency.
RPE rating (modified Borg)
A subjective measure of exertion ranging from 0 to 10, where 10 represents maximal effort.
Normal Response in CPET
Expected physiological responses during CPET, such as pVO2 >80% predicted, VO2/work 9-11 mL/min/W, and SpO2 >95% or less than 4% drop.
