Diffusion
a method of passive transport where small molecules pass through the cell membrane. molecules move from a region of high concentration to low concentration.
passive transport
the movement of substances across a cell membrane without the use of energy by the cell
Active transport
The movement of materials through a cell membrane using energy.
Osmosis
A method of passive transport. Diffusion of water is through a selectively permeable membrane
Facilitated diffusion
A method of passive transport
Movement of larger molecules (ex. glucose C6H12O6) across cell membranes through special protein gates.
Endocytosis
An active transport process by which a cell takes in material through the cell membrane folding into itself, pinching off and forming a vesicle.
Pinocytosis
A type of endocytosis in which the cell takes in small droplets of extracellular fluid along with dissolved materials. The cell membrane encircles the droplets and pinches off inside the cell.
Phagocytosis
A type of endocytosis in which a cell engulfs large solid particles. The cell membrane encircles the particles and pinches off once inside the cell.
Exocytosis
Type of active transport where vesicles inside the cell move to the cell membrane and release context outside of cell. The vesicle material is returned to the cell membrane.
