Receptive language
The ability to associate sounds with facial movements and recognize when sounds are broken into words.
Productive language
Babbling in multilingual sounds and gestures, evolving to sounds similar to the household’s language.
Surface structure
The string of words used to communicate meaning.
Deep structure
The underlying meaning or abstract representation of relationships expressed in a statement.
Language Acquisition Device (LAD)
A theoretical construct proposed by Chomsky, indicating that humans are prewired to learn language.
Linguistic determinism
The proposition that language actually determines how we think.
Bilingual advantage
