Tracheostomy
A surgical procedure to create an opening through the neck into the trachea to facilitate breathing.
Percutaneous Tracheostomy
A tracheostomy performed at the bedside using a needle and dilator.
Inner Cannula
A removable tube within a tracheostomy that prevents obstruction.
Fenestrated Trach Tube
A tracheostomy tube with an opening that allows air to flow through the vocal cords for speaking.
Bag Valve Mask (BVM)
A medical apparatus employed to provide positive pressure ventilation to patients who are not breathing or not breathing adequately.
Endotracheal Intubation
A medical procedure where a tube is inserted into the trachea to ensure an open airway.
Aspiration
Inhalation of food, liquid, or vomit into the airways, which can lead to complications.
Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP)
Lung infection that occurs in people who are on mechanical ventilation.
Oxygenation
The process of providing oxygen to the tissues of the body.
Laryngoscope
An instrument used to obtain a view of the vocal cords and the glottis.
Hypnotic
A drug that induces sleep or sedation, commonly used during intubation procedures.
Paralytic Agent
A drug that induces temporary paralysis to facilitate intubation.
