Matter
anything that has MASS and takes up SPACE (volume)

Chemical Property
tells us whether a substance has the ability to change into a new substance with different properties

Reactivity
CHEMICAL PROPERTY:How easily it combines with other substances to form new compounds

Heat of Combustion
CHEMICAL PROPERTY:The amount of energy released when a substance burns

Flammability
CHEMICAL PROPERTY: The ability of fuels to ignite easily

Acidity
CHEMICAL PROPERTY: Produces Hydrogen (H+) ions when dissolved in water

Basicity
CHEMICAL PROPERTY: Produces Hydroxide (OH-) ions when dissolved in water

Toxicity
CHEMICAL PROPERTY: Dangers to the health of living things

Physical Property
characteristic of a material that can be observed or measured without destroying the material or changing it into something else by changing its chemical composition

Ductility
PHYSICAL PROPERTY:The ability of an object to be pulled into a wire without bending or breaking

Density
PHYSICAL PROPERTY: The amount of matter in a particular space

Malleability
PHYSICAL PROPERTY:the ability of a substance to be hammered into thin sheets

Luster
PHYSICAL PROPERTY: How shiny or dull a substance is

Solubility
PHYSICAL PROPERTY: The ability of one substance to dissolve within another substance

Solution
a mixture in which one substance is dissolved in another

Solute
the substance that is being dissolved

Solvent
the substance that is doing the dissolving

Element
A pure substance that consists entirely of one type of atom

Compound
A pure substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds

Pure Substance
A substance made of only one kind of matter and having definite properties

Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture

Hetergeneous Mixture
A mixture that is not uniform, in which different samples may have different compositions

Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
