Automatic Processing
System 1 processing that is unintentional, uncontrollable, efficient, and unconscious.
Controlled Processing
System 2 processing that is intentional, effortful, conscious, and inefficient.
Dual Process Model
Model suggesting that initial impressions are formed automatically and then may switch to controlled processing for personalization.
Subliminal Priming
Exposure to a stimulus that is rapid and below the level of conscious awareness, yet is understood by the senses.
Affective Priming
Priming that utilizes an emotional state to encourage associations with that state.
Fusiform Face Area (FFA)
Brain area involved in facial recognition, more active in the right hemisphere.
Misinformation Effect
When misleading information influences a person's memory of an event.
Prototype Theory
The idea that categories are organized around an idealized 'prototype' rather than strict definitions.
Exemplar Theory
The concept that individuals remember specific instances (exemplars) rather than an average prototype.
Self-Reference Effect
The improved recall of items that are personally relevant or related to one's self-concept.
Temporal Self-appraisal Theory
Theory suggesting that people perceive their present self positively while distanced from their past selves.
Self-esteem
The evaluation of oneself based on the congruence between the actual self and the ideal self.
Cybernetic Theory of Self-regulation
A dynamic feedback system involving current status, goals, monitoring discrepancies, and control adjustments.
Belonging
The human need to be accepted by others, critical for health and well-being.
Actor-Observer Bias
The tendency to attribute one's own behavior to external factors, while attributing others' behaviors to personal traits.
Self-Serving Bias
The tendency to attribute positive outcomes to oneself and negative outcomes to external factors.
Negativity Bias in PTSD
The tendency of individuals with PTSD to attribute negative intent to others and view neutral situations as threatening.
