Colligative Properties
Properties of solutions that depend on the number of solute particles in a solution, not their identity.
Freezing Point Depression
The lowering of the freezing point of a solvent when a solute is added.
Molality
The number of moles of solute per kilogram of solvent.
Van't Hoff factor (i)
The number of particles into which a solute dissociates in solution.
Supercooling
A condition where a liquid is cooled below its freezing point without solidifying.
Nucleation
The process by which crystal formation begins in a supercooled liquid.
Cryoscopic Constant (Kf)
A constant used to calculate the depression in freezing point of a solution.
Osmotic Pressure
The pressure required to prevent the flow of solvent into a solution via osmosis.
Elevation in Boiling Point
The increase in boiling point of a solvent when a solute is added.
Lowering of Vapor Pressure
The decrease in vapor pressure of a solvent when a non-volatile solute is added.
