Rights that allow citizens to participate in democracy, including voting in elections and running for office.
Mobility Rights
The right to move, live, and work anywhere in Canada and to enter or leave Canada.
Legal Rights
Rights that protect people in the justice system, including the right to a fair trial and protection against unlawful search or detention.
Equality Rights
The right to be treated equally under the law without discrimination based on race, gender, age, religion, or disability.
Language Rights
The right to use English or French in government services and federal institutions.
Minority Language Education Rights
The right to receive education in English or French as a minority language where numbers are sufficient.
Indigenous Treaty Rights
Rights recognized in treaties between Indigenous peoples and the Crown that protect land, culture, and agreements.
Responsibilities Connected to Rights and Freedoms
Duties citizens have to support democracy, including obeying laws, respecting others’ rights, participating in society, and staying informed.
Right Wing
Political views that generally support lower taxes, less government involvement, and more individual responsibility.
Left Wing
Political views that generally support more government involvement, social programs, and equality.
Moderate
A political position between left and right wing views.
