Tourism
The activity of travelling for leisure, business, or cultural purposes, usually involving an overnight stay.
Tourist Flow
The movement of tourists from one region or country to another, often shown with arrows on a map.
Emitting Country
A country from which tourists depart (e.g. France, USA, China).
Receiving Country
A country that welcomes tourists (e.g. Spain, Thailand, Mexico).
Mass Tourism
Large-scale tourism involving millions of visitors, often concentrated in popular destinations.
Cultural Tourism
Travel to experience history, traditions, monuments, and museums.
Ecotourism
Responsible travel to natural areas that protects the environment and supports local communities.
Medical Tourism
Travel to another country for medical treatment.
Economic Dependence
When a country's economy relies heavily on one sector, making it vulnerable to changes in that sector.
Leakage
When money generated by tourism leaves the local economy (e.g. profits going to foreign hotel chains).
All-Inclusive Resort
A hotel where tourists pay one price for everything, often keeping spending within the resort.
Multiplier Effect
When money spent by tourists circulates through the local economy, creating additional income and jobs.
Foreign Currency
Money from other countries (e.g. US dollars, euros) that tourism brings into a destination.
Coral Reef Degradation
Damage to coral reef ecosystems from pollution, warming, and physical contact.
Carrying Capacity
The maximum number of tourists a destination can support without environmental damage.
Carbon Footprint
The total amount of greenhouse gases produced by travel and tourism activities.
Commodification
Turning local culture, traditions, or natural features into products sold to tourists.
Sustainable Tourism
Tourism that meets the needs of present tourists and host communities while protecting the future.
Globalization
The increasing interconnection of the world's economies, cultures, and populations through trade, technology, migration, and communication.
Superpower
A country with dominant economic, technological, and cultural influence on a global scale.
GDP (Gross Domestic Product)
The total value of all goods and services produced in a country in one year.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)
Investment made by a company or individual in one country into business interests in another country.
