what are natural resources?
things that provide us with the materials needed for warmth, shelter, food and transport
what is a finite resource?
a resource that cannot be replaced as quickly as it is being used, so it will eventually run out
example of finite resource?
fossil fuels
what is a renewable resource?
a resource that can be replaced as quickly as it is being used, so it will never run out
example of renewable resource/?
timber - after wood is harvested, it can be regrown
how does agriculture help to support the use of resources?
allows us to efficiently grow enough resources to support the world
example of how agriculture has helped?
the cotton crop is now able to supply enough cotton to meet the world’s demand
wood being grown has allowed for resources like timber, as well as woodchips being used as biofuel for energy
how has chemistry helped to play a role in sustainable development?
improving agricultural and industrial processes
allows us to maximise the production of natural products
what are examples of natural products that are replaced/supplemented by agricultural/synthetic products?
rubber - originally from sap of trees, but the production of synthetic rubber helps to meet demand
fertilisers - to increase crop yield
