Independent Assortment
The principle that alleles for different traits are distributed to gametes independently of one another.
Linked Assortment
The hypothesis that alleles of two different characters are inherited together.
Chi-Square Test
A statistical method used to determine if observed data fits a particular hypothesis.
Recombinant Offspring
Offspring that have inherited a combination of alleles that differs from that of either parent due to crossing over.
Non-Recombinant Offspring
Offspring that have inherited the same combination of alleles as one of the parents.
Crossing Over
The process by which homologous chromosomes exchange genetic material during meiosis.
Null Hypothesis
A statement that there is no effect or no difference, used as a basis for hypothesis testing.
CentiMorgan
A unit of measure for genetic linkage, representing a 1% chance of recombination occurring between two genes.
Linkage Group
A group of genes that tend to be inherited together due to their physical proximity on a chromosome.
Double Crossover
A type of crossing over event where two separate segments of homologous chromosomes exchange places.
Genetic Mapping
A technique used to determine the order and distance between genes on a chromosome.
Haploid Gametes
The reproductive cells that contain only one set of chromosomes.
