Superior Vena Cava
A large vein identified on page 4 of the lab notes.
Inferior Vena Cava
A large vein identified on page 7 of the lab notes.
Right Atrium
The upper right chamber of the heart.
Right Auricle
An ear-like flap protruding from the right atrium.
Tricuspid Valve
The valve located between the right atrium and right ventricle.
Right Ventricle
The lower right chamber of the heart.
Pulmonary Valve
The valve located at the base of the pulmonary trunk.
Pulmonary Trunk
The major vessel that carries blood from the right ventricle towards the lungs.
Right and Left Pulmonary Arteries
Arteries that branch from the pulmonary trunk to carry blood to the lungs.
Right and Left Pulmonary Veins
Veins that return oxygenated blood to the left side of the heart.
Left Atrium
The upper left chamber of the heart.
Left Auricle
An ear-like flap protruding from the left atrium.
Mitral Valve
Also called the bicuspid valve.
Left Ventricle
The lower left chamber of the heart.
Aortic Valve
The valve located between the left ventricle and the aorta.
Aorta
The main artery of the body, supplying oxygenated blood to the circulatory system.
Ascending Aorta
The first section of the aorta, which starts from the left ventricle.
Aortic Arch
The curved portion of the aorta between the ascending and descending parts.
Descending Aorta
The part of the aorta that continues down after the aortic arch.
Brachiocephalic Trunk
The first branch of the aortic arch.
Left Common Carotid Artery
The second branch of the aortic arch.
Left Subclavian Artery
The third branch of the aortic arch.
Interatrial Septum
The wall between the right and left atria.
Fossa Ovalis
An oval depression located in the interatrial septum.
Pectinate Muscles
Muscles found in the walls of the atria.
Chordae Tendineae
Structures only present with AV valves (tricuspid and mitral valves) that connect papillary muscles to AV valves.
Papillary Muscles
Muscles in the ventricles that are always connected to chordae tendineae.
Trabeculae Carneae
Ridges in the walls of the ventricles.
Interventricular Septum
The wall between the right and left ventricles.
Apex
The bottom, pointed part of the heart.
Endocardium
The shiny, lighter pink inner layer of the heart.
Myocardium
The muscle layer of the heart.
Right Coronary Artery
An artery supplying the right side of the heart muscle.
Right Marginal Branch
A branch of the right coronary artery.
Posterior Interventricular Branch
Same thing as the posterior descending branch; located on the back of the heart.
Left Coronary Artery
A coronary artery that is not able to be seen clearly on any model.
Circumflex Branch
A branch of the left coronary artery.
Anterior Interventricular Branch
Same thing as the left anterior descending branch.
Coronary Sinus
A vessel located on the back of the heart that collects blood from the heart muscle.
Hole Through Which Coronary Sinus Empties Blood into Right Atrium
The opening that allows blood from the coronary sinus to enter the right atrium.
