If the professor asks you to set up the monark bike at 100 watts, 50 rpms; what KP should he be on?

2 KP (watts doesnt matter). Always multiply rpms by KP to get watts.

Identify two skills learned in the lab - explain why be short and brief

One skill I learned was how to take blood pressure - I liked learning this because I want to go to medical school and I am doing EMT this summer. This is a basic but essential skill that will be necessary throughout my career.

Another skill I learned is how to run a VO2 max test. I thought this was cool to learn because this is something you can do at home if you have a treadmill. It doesnt require a lot of equipment and it gives you cool results to analyze.

Define blood pressure

Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the arterial walls

4
New cards

How is systolic blood pressure determined?

It is determined by the first korotkoff sound

5
New cards

How is diastolic blood pressure determined?

It is determined by the disappearance of the korotkoff sound

Describe the calibration of the metabolic cart

There is 2 calibrations.

  1. Flow meter calibration - uses a 3.0L syringe to calibrate the volume of air

  2. Gas calibration - compares the room air to the standard gases in the tank such as nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide

7

Define VO2 oxygen consumption

VO2 is the rate of oxygen consumption by the body using the FICK equation. FICK is cardiac output x AVO2 difference.

8
New cards

Explain how oxygen consumption is measured

It is measured by indirect calorimetry. This is when we perform a graded exercise test (aka VO2 max test) on the treadmill

9

Identify one muscular fitness test. Explain purpose and what it measures.

1RM - 1 Repetition Max Test

Purpose - to determine an individuals maximum dynamic strength

We are measuring absolute and relative strength

Identify one body composition assessment and explain the rationale - provide one pro and one con of the assessment

Dexa assessment - scans your body through an xray machine and provides information about % body fat, body mass, lean mass, and bone mineral density

Pro - none of the other tests mentioned can measure bon mineral density, this machine is unique
Con - you need to be certified and go through a training on the specific Dexa machine you are using
