metaphor
a figure of speech that makes a direct comparison between two unlike things, suggesting that one is the other, often used to convey deeper meanings and insights.
rhyme
words with identical sounds such as cat, and hat or glare and air
imagery
the use of descriptive language to create vivid sensory experiences in the reader's mind.
repetition
the intentional use of the same word or phrase multiple times to emphasize a particular idea or theme in a text.
hyperbole
an exaggerated statement used for effect, not meant to be taken literally.
alliteration
the repetition of initial consonant sounds in a series of words, creating emphasis. EXAMPLE: She sells sea shells by the sea shore
simile
a figure of speech that directly compares two unlike things using like or as
consonance
the repetition of a consonant at the end of two or more words. (hop up the step).
onomatopoeia
the use of words that mimic sounds and appeal to our senses of hearing. They help bring description to life. Brrrrt, Crackle, ect.
personification
a type of figurative language in which a non-human subject is given human characteristics.
flat character
one-dimensional, undeveloped character, usually minor
static character
one who does not change over the course of a work
round character
a complex, well-developed character, like a real person
dynamic character
one who changes over the course of the story
parodox
It pairs opposing ideas or scenarios that seemingly cannot both be true.
