Amphiarthrosis
Slightly mobile joint
Articulation
Joint of the body
Biaxial joint
Type of diarthrosis; a joint that allows for movements within two planes (two axes)
Cartilaginous joint
Joint at which the bones are united by hyaline cartilage (synchondrosis) or fibrocartilage (symphysis)
Diarthrosis
Freely mobile joint
Fibrous joint
Joint where the articulating areas of the adjacent bones are connected by fibrous connective tissue (Syndesmoses)
Joint
Site at which two or more bones or bone and cartilage come together (articulate)
Joint cavity
Space enclosed by the articular capsule of a synovial joint that is filled with synovial fluid and contains the articulating surfaces of the adjacent bones
Multiaxial joint
Type of diarthrosis; a joint that allows for movements within three planes (three axes)
Synarthrosis
Immobile or nearly immobile joint
Synovial joint
Joint at which the articulating surfaces of the bones are located within a joint cavity formed by an articular capsule
Uniaxial joint
Type of diarthrosis; joint that allows for motion within only one plane (one axis)
Synovial Joints - Planar
Gliding motion between carpals and tarsals
Synovial Joints - Hinge
Unidirectional joint seen at knee and elbow
Synovial Joints - Pivot
Rotation along an axis seen between C1 and C2, and between radius and ulna
Synovial Joints - Saddle
Looks like a saddle; trapezium of the carpal-metacarpal joint, seen in the thumb
Synovial Joints - Condyloid
Ovoid (3 dimentional egg shaped) surface that articulates with a bone that fits in the ovoid surface and produces movement along two planes, metacarpal-phalangeal joint
Synovial Joints - Ball and socket
Ball in socket, seen in shoulder and hips
Fibrous joints - Sutures
Joint composed of tiny ligaments between cranial bones
Fibrous joints - Syndesmosis
Joint between two bones united by strong membrane or ligament
Fibrous joints - Gomphosis
Periodontal ligaments supporting a tooth in a bony socket
Cartilaginous - Synchondrosis
Epiphyseal plate (growth plate, between the ends (epiphysis) and the shaft (metaphysis) of long bones), and ribs to sternum
Cartilaginous - Symphysis
Between pubic bones, and intervertebral discs
