What are signals?
Installed at intersections to control the movement of vehicles and traffic
How are signals arranged?
Either vertically or horizontally

What must you do at a steady red light?
Stop before crossing the marked stop line or crosswalk
What do you do if there are no lines at a steady red light?
Stop before entering the intersection. Wait for a green light before you start.
Can you turn right while the light is red?
Yes unless a “NO TURN ON RED” sign is posted at the intersection

What must you do before turning?
You must first stop, check for and yield to pedestrians and other traffic
When can you turn left after stopping at a red light?
If you’re in the left lane and turning left from a one-way street or onto another one-way street unless a sign tells you not to

What does a steady yellow light mean
Tells you a steady red light will soon appear
What do you do if you're driving towards an intersection and a yellow light appears
Slow down and prepare to stop

The movement permitted by the green arrow is about to end

What should you do at a yellow arrow
Slow down and prepare to stop completely before entering the intersection
What if you're within the intersection or cannot stop safely before entering the intersection at a yellow arrow?
Carefully turn in the direction the arrow is pointing

What does a red arrow indicate?
You may not turn in the direction the arrow is pointing

What does a flashing red light mean?
Same meaning as a stop sign. Come to a complete stop, look both ways, and proceed only after the intersection is clear

What does a flashing yellow light mean?
Caution. Slow down, look, and proceed with care.
What should you do at a non-functioning traffic light?
Should be treated as a 4-way stop sign
What are ramp-metering signals?
Used to control the flow of traffic onto very congested highways and usually operate during peak rush hours

What do ramp-metering signals do?
Alternates between steady green and steady red
What should you do before entering a highway?
Wait for the green signal
What's the rule for single-lane ramps?
Only one car may enter the highway each time the light tums green
What's the rule for multi-lane ramps?
There will be a ramp-meter for each lane

What are lane-use control signals?
Special signals placed directly over lanes where the direction of travel for a particular lane changes to ease the flow of traffic in and out of the city during peak rush hour

What does a steady downward green arrow indicate?
You may use the lane

What does a steady yellow X indicate?
You must switch lames because the direction of travel for that lane is about to be reversed

What does a steady red X indicate?
You cannot use the lane

What does a white, steady, one-way left turn arrow over a lame mean?
You may only turn left if you are in that lane

What does a white, steady two-way left turn arrow mean?
You may only turn left if you're in that lane but the lane is shared by left-turning drivers approaching from the opposite direction
What are the 4 pedestrian signals?
The walk or don't walk lights, the lighted picture of a walking person, and an upraised hand.

What do you do when a steady WALK or walking person comes on?
Start crossing, but be alert for turning vehicles that may not lawfully yield the right of way

If you are in the street, finish crossing If you haven't left the curb, do not start to cross.

Do not cross
How do you spot a blind pedestrian?
They carry a white cane or walk with a guide dog
What must you do when you spot a blind pedestrian?
You must slow down, always wield the right-of-way and then proceed with caution. Be prepared to stop your vehicle in order to prevent injury or danger to the pedestrian
What are school zone signals?
Flashing yellow signals placed on the school zone speed limit signs

At school zone signals, what must you do when the yellow signals are flashing or during the time periods indicated on the sign?
You must travel no faster than 15 mph
What is the consequence tor exceeding the speed limit in a school zone?
Three points on your driving record and a fine

You should always look both ways, and listen for any approaching trains or signals before proceeding across the railroad tracks
