Atelectasis
A condition where the lung or a section of the lung collapses or does not inflate properly.
Gas absorption atelectasis
Atelectasis caused by obstruction leading to the absorption of gas in the alveoli, resulting in shrinkage and collapse.
Airway clearance therapy
Therapeutic interventions designed to remove mucus and secretions from the airways.
Mucus plugs
Thick mucus that can obstruct airways and lead to atelectasis.
Lung expansion therapy
Therapeutic techniques to promote the inflation of collapsed areas of the lung.
Transthoracic pressure
The pressure difference across the thorax affecting lung expansion.
Incentive spirometry
A device that encourages patients to take deep breaths to increase lung volume.
Positive pressure ventilation
Mechanical ventilation that uses positive pressure to inflate the lungs.
Bronchoscopy
A procedure using a scope to visualize and remove obstructions from the airways.
Absorption atelectasis vs. Compression atelectasis
Absorption atelectasis is due to gas absorption from obstructed alveoli; Compression atelectasis is caused by external pressure on the lungs compressing lung tissue.
Chest X-ray interpretation
Evaluating X-ray images to identify conditions such as atelectasis based on air and tissue density.
Fine late inspiratory crackles
Abnormal lung sounds indicative of fluid or secretions in the alveoli, often heard in atelectasis.
Postoperative atelectasis
Atelectasis that occurs following surgery due to shallow breathing, pain, or reduced mobility.
Alveolar pressure
The pressure within the alveoli, critical for maintaining lung inflation.
Ventilator assist
Using a machine to help a patient breathe when they are unable to do so effectively.
Chest physiotherapy
A group of treatments to improve lung function and clear mucus.
Transalveolar pressure
The pressure difference between the alveoli and the pleural space aiding in lung inflation.
Neuromuscular disorders
Conditions that affect the nerves and muscles responsible for breathing.
Auscultation
The act of listening to the internal sounds of the body, usually using a stethoscope.
Hypoxemia
A condition of low blood oxygen levels often associated with atelectasis.
