Selective Media
Media with properties that inhibit the growth of certain types of bacteria, allowing only specific organisms to grow.
Differential Media
Media that allows different bacteria to be distinguished based on their unique morphological and biochemical properties.
Enriched Media
Media that contain additional nutrients to support the growth of fastidious bacteria that do not grow well under standard conditions.
Phenylethyl Alcohol Agar
A selective media that isolates most gram-positive organisms while being partially inhibitory to gram-negative organisms.
MacConkey Agar
A differential media used to isolate enteric bacteria, differentiating between lactose fermenters (pink) and non-fermenters (tan/transparent).
Mannitol Salt Agar
A selective and differential media favoring Staphylococcus species that can ferment mannitol, indicated by a color change to yellow.
Crystal Violet Agar
A selective media that inhibits the growth of gram-positive bacteria, allowing only gram-negative organisms to grow.
7.5% Sodium Chloride Agar
A selective media that inhibits most organisms except for halophilic ones, used to isolate Staphylococcus species.
Eosin-Methylene Blue Agar
Differential media with eosin and methylene blue dyes that inhibit gram-positive bacteria and differentiate fermenting bacteria based on color.
Blood Agar
An enriched media made from nutrient agar mixed with animal blood, used to showcase hemolytic properties of microorganisms.
Chocolate Agar
An enriched media made from lysed red blood cells, non-selective, used for the growth of fastidious pathogenic bacteria.
