Simile
Comparison between two unlike things using 'like' or 'as'. Example: 'Sweet as candy', 'Fast like a cheetah'.
Metaphor
Comparison between two unlike objects without using 'like' or 'as'. Example: 'When Sam is hungry, he is a real bear', 'Weather is a song'.
Alliteration
Repetition of sounds in neighboring words, usually involving the first consonant sounds. Example: 'Sally sells seashells by the sea shore', 'Slithering snakes'.
Onomatopoeia
The sound of a word mimics the sound to which it refers. Example: 'Boom', 'whisper', 'sizzled', 'The balloon popped in my hand'.
Personification
Assigning human attributes to non-human objects or abstract ideas; spoken as if it's alive. Example: 'The kite danced in the sky', 'The sun covered my face'.
Apostrophe
Directly addressing a person or quality as if they were present. Example: 'Oh Canada', 'Twinkle, twinkle little star how I wonder', 'Romeo, oh Romeo'.
