Climate Change
A long-term change in the average weather patterns, often caused by human activities such as the combustion of fossil fuels.
Greenhouse Gases
Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse effect and global warming.
Combustion of Fossil Fuels
The burning of coal, oil, and natural gas, releasing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other greenhouse gases.
Greenhouse Effect
The process by which greenhouse gases warm Earth's surface by allowing sunlight to enter and trapping heat.
Balancing Chemical Equations
The process of ensuring that the number of atoms for each element is the same on both sides of a chemical reaction.
Reactants
The starting materials in a chemical reaction, found on the left side of a chemical equation.
Products
The substances formed as a result of a chemical reaction, found on the right side of a chemical equation.
Law of Conservation of Mass
A principle stating that mass is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction; it is conserved.
Inspection Method
A common technique for balancing chemical equations by adjusting coefficients without altering subscripts.
Chemical Equation
A symbolic representation of a chemical reaction, showing the reactants and products as well as their states.
