1. teen dating violence-
violence in a past or present romantic or consensual
relationship that includes physical, emotional, verbal, financial, and/or sexual
abuse or harassment
2. consent-
an ongoing mutual agreement between dating partners about what they
do or do not want to experience; may be withdrawn at any time
3. abstinence
(sexual risk avoidance)- purposely not taking part in unsafe behaviors,
especially sexual activity
4. risk behavior-
an action or choice that may cause injury or harm to you or others
5. refusal skills-
assertive ways to decline risky behaviors
6. verbal communication-
using words, both written or oral (speech, letters, emails,
texts, drawings, photos, etc.) to express ideas
7. nonverbal communication-
all the ways you can get a message across without
using words (body language: smiling, shrugging, posture, gestures, and facial
expressions)
8. physical abuse-
any intentional use of (physical) touch to cause fear, injury, or
assert control
9. emotional abuse
–purposely lowering a (dating) partner’s self-esteem; creating
self-doubt and personal blame for the abuse the person is experiencing
10. sexual abuse-
any sexual activity between two people without willing, active,
unimpaired consent by both persons
11. verbal abuse-
verbal attempts to ridicule, minimize, or shame your dating partner
12. financial abuse-
the exerting of power and control through finances
13. flirting-
behaving in a playful or teasing way as if you are interested in or
attracted to someone
14. sexual harassment-
any unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors,
or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature
15. red flags-
behaviors of one or both partners in a dating relationship
that indicate the relationship may be unhealthy
16. gender stereotypes-
the generalized beliefs about what a person should do or how
a person should act based on their gender
