Summary of NFHS Football Penalties

This is a collection of the NFHS football penalties. Each notecard will have an infraction and brief description of the scenerio and then the definition side of the the notecard will list the informaton for the penalty in the following order: Distance, Type (Live, dead, Non player), enforcment spot, rule section art, signal.

Delay of Game. Failure to snap or free kick before the play clock expires

5-D-SS. 3-6-2a. 7-21

Delay of Game. Unnecessarily carrying a dead ball.

5-D-SS. 3-6-2b. 7-21

Delay of Game. Coach- referee conference with no change of ruling, after all charged timeouts are used

Delay of Game. Snapping or free kicking the ball before the ready for play

5-D-SS. 3-6-2e. 7-21

Delay of Game. Any other conduct which unduly prolongs the game

Delay of Game. Failing to un-pile from an opponent in a timely manner

Forfeiture of game. Failure by a team to play within two minutes after being ordered to do so.

Delay of Game. Home team management not having field clear at the beginning of the half

Illegal substitution. Replaced player not leaving the field after three seconds

5-D-SS. 3-7-1. 7-22

Illegal substitution. Player or replaced player leaving field anywhere other than team box sideline.

5-D-SS. 3-7-2. 7-22

Illegal substitution. During the same dead ball interval, substitute who becomes a playeer and then withdraws or a player who withdraws and then reenters.

Illegal substitution. Replaced player or substitute unsuccessfully leaving the field during a down

5-L-PS. 3-7-4. 22

Illegal substitution. An entering substitute not on team’s side of the neutral zone when the ball is snapped or free kicked.

5-L-PS. 3-7-5. 22

Illegal substitution. Substitute enters during a down and does not participate.

5-NP-SS. 3-7-5. 22

Free kick infraction. Free kick not made between inbounds marks or a punt after a safety not kicked within onee step behind K’s free kick line.

5-D-SS. 6-1-2. 7-19

Encroachment. Player beyond his free kick line.

5-D-SS. 6-1-3a. 7-18

Free kick infraction. Player other than the kicker more than 5 yards beyond K’s free-kick line
