Solomon
The son of King David who became king of Israel, known for his wisdom and for building the Temple in Jerusalem.
Temple of Jerusalem
The magnificent house of worship built by Solomon where the Ark of the Covenant was kept and where God’s presence was shown.
Kingdom of Israel
The northern kingdom formed after Solomon’s death when ten tribes broke away under King Jeroboam.
Kingdom of Judah
The southern kingdom made up of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, ruled by David’s descendants.
Babylonian Exile
The period when the Babylonians conquered Judah and took many Israelites captive to Babylon.
Jeroboam
The leader and first king of the northern kingdom who set up bull statues to stop the people from going to Jerusalem to worship.
Amos and Hosea
Prophets who preached in the northern kingdom and taught about inner faith, worshiping Yahweh alone, and living with justice.
Elijah and Elisha
Great prophets who worked miracles during the time of King Ahab.
King Hezekiah
A good king of Judah who was supported by the prophet Isaiah.
Jeremiah
The prophet who warned Judah about its unfaithfulness before the Babylonian destruction.
721 B.C.
The year the Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom of Israel and took many Israelites into exile.
598 B.C.
The year of the first exile of Judah to Babylon before the final fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple.
King Josiah
A good king of Judah who, along with Hezekiah, tried to implement reforms to lead the people back to God.
Bull Statues
Idols set up by Jeroboam that confused the people and encouraged pagan worship, such as Baal worship.
