What are the two main types of ossification in the skull?
Endochondral ossification for the cranial base and dermal ossification for the rest of the cranium.
What embryonic structures contribute to the development of the skull?
Somitomeres, occipital somites, and neural crest cells.
What does the frontonasal process develop into?
The forehead and the region around the eyes.
What are the two parts of the first pharyngeal arch?
Dorsal process and ventral process.
What skeletal structures are formed from the second pharyngeal arch?
Stapes, styloid process of the temporal bone, and part of the hyoid bone.
What is the role of the nasal placodes in facial development?
They mark the position of the nostrils and invaginate to form nasal pits.
What is the primary palate?
The area of the palate anterior to the incisive foramen, formed from medial nasal processes.
What can errors in fusion of facial elements lead to?
Cleft lip and/or palate.
What are somites and when do they develop?
Somites are bilateral pairs of mesoderm that develop from days 20 to 30 in the paraxial mesoderm.
What are the three regions of the somite?
Sclerotome, myotome, and dermatome.
What is resegmentation in the context of vertebrae development?
The process where cranial and caudal halves of each sclerotome separate and merge with adjacent halves to form vertebrae.
What is the function of the annulus fibrosus in intervertebral discs?
It provides structure with many collagen fibers surrounding the nucleus pulposus.
What does the nucleus pulposus arise from?
Remnants of the notochord.
What structures develop from the costal processes of T1-T12?
The ribs.
When do ribs begin to ossify?
In weeks 8-9 of development.
What is the significance of the sternal bars in thorax development?
They fuse midline to form the sternum around week 9.
What is the role of mesenchyme in the development of the spine?
It forms the cartilage model that later ossifies into vertebrae.
What happens during chondrification in vertebrae development?
A cartilage model forms in each mesenchyme segment starting in week 6.
What are the ossification centers for the vertebrae?
1-2 for the centrum, 2 for the neural arch, and 2 for costal processes.
What is the function of the thoracic costal processes?
They develop into ribs.
What contributes to the formation of the mandible?
The fused mandibular processes from the ventral part of the first pharyngeal arch.
What is the significance of the medial and lateral nasal processes?
They form the midline of the nose and the sides of the nose, respectively.
What is the role of the maxillary processes in facial development?
They form the maxillae, zygomatics, and overlying soft tissue of the cheeks.
What is the outcome of the fusion of the medial nasal processes?
They form the midline of the nose and the philtrum.
What is the fate of the xiphoid process in terms of ossification?
It may ossify as early as year 5-6 or never at all.
