Combustion Reaction
A reaction in which a substance reacts with oxygen, producing heat and light.
Hydrocarbon
Compounds made of hydrogen and carbon, such as methane, butane, and octane, commonly used as fuels.
Methane
A colorless, odorless, and highly flammable gas that is the main component of natural gas.
Natural Gas
A fossil fuel formed from the remains of plants and animals, primarily composed of methane.
Respiration
A slow combustion reaction in the body where glucose reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water, and energy.
Oxidation Reaction
A chemical reaction involving the loss of electrons from a reactant.
Redox Reaction
A reaction involving both oxidation and reduction processes.
Combustion of Methane Equation
The chemical equation for the combustion of methane is CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O.
Combustion of Glucose Equation
The chemical equation for respiration is C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy.
Oxidation Definition
Defined as the loss of electrons from a reactant.
