Understand an apply the cardinal principals of radiation control
time, distance, and shielding
Time:
minimize time spent in the vicinity of the radiation source while it is in operation
distance:
increase distance between radiation source while it is in operation
shielding:
material which will attenuate the radiation from the source. Ex. lead
Do not allow familiarity to
result in false security
Never stand in
the primary beam
Always wear protective apparel
when not behind a protective barrier
always wear an occupetional radiation monitor and position it
outside the protective apron at the collar
never hold a patient during radiographic examination
use mechanical restraining devices when possible. have patens or freinds hold the patient
the person who is ho9lding the patient must always
wear a protective apron and, if possible, protectice gloves
use gonadal shields on all people fo chilbearing age
when such use will not inferfere with the examination
Examination of the pelvis and ower abdomen of a pregnant patient should always
be avoided whenever possible, especially durinf the first trimester
always collimate
to the smallest field size appropiate for the examination
