What do digestive enzymes do?
Breakdown large insoluble food molecules into smaller soluble molecules, allowing them to pass through the walls of the small intestine into the blood stream
Amylase Enzymes
Digest carbohydrate substrates e.g starch into maltose and dextrin
Protease enzymes
Digest protein substrates into amino acids
Lipase enzymes
Digest fat substrates from lipids into glyce
Peristalsis
The process by which food is moved through the oesophagus and intestines. Muscles in the walls of the oesophagus/intestines contract and relax rhythmically, pushing the bolus of food along.
