Legal Forward Pass Play
Time between the snap and when the forward pass ends
Pass Ends
When the ball is complete, incomplete, intercepted
Basic Spot
Forward pass play: Previous spot
- Exception: Personal or Unsportsmanlike Conduct on B and there is no change of position moves the spot to the end of the last run
Run after forward pass play: End of the related run
Eligibility Requirements for A
Wearing a number that is not between 50 and 79
Be a back or lined up on the end of the line of scrimmage
Originally Eligible
A player: Meets the two eligibility requirements
B player: All
Original Ineligible
A player: Doesn't meet both the eligibility requirements
B player: None
Loss of Eligibility
A player: Goes out of bounds on their own during a legal forward pass play
B player: Never
Illegal Touching by Originally Eligible Player
An original eligible A player looses there eligibility then touches the ball before a B player or an Offical touches the ball
Penalty: Loss of down at the previous
- Same effect as an incomplete pass
Illegal Touching by Originally Eligible Player
An original ineligible A player touches the ball before a B player or an Offical touches the ball
Penalty: 5yd. penalty from the previous spot and a loss of down
Ineligible Player Down Field
When there is a legal forward pass beyond the line of scrimmage no original ineligible player can go more than 3 yards down field until the pass is released
- Exception: The passer is legally throwing the ball away in or near the sideline
Penalty: 5 yard penalty from the previous spot
Beyond the Line of Scrimmage
The ball must make it beyond the line of scrimmage without touching anything in flight
If the ball touches anything behind the LOS then it is considered to be behind the LOS
Illegal Forward Pass
Team A
- Team A player passes the ball when his whole body is or has been completely beyond the neural zone when the ball is released
- Team A player there is a second forward pass
- Team A illegally grounds the ball
Team B
- Every froward pass B can throw
Requirements to Legally Ground the Ball
Conserve time (Spiking the ball)
- Only 1 A player has possessed the ball
- The ball has not touched the ground
- The ball is immediately thrown into the ground
Conserve yardage (Throwing the ball away)
- Only 1 A player has possessed the ball
- The player is outside the tackle box and throws the ball beyond the LOS extended or throws a pass in the vicinity of an eligible receiver
