Theology of the Body
Series of 129 talks by Pope John Paul II. Purpose: give an adequate Christian Anthropology; sees person in imago dei.
Sacramentality of the body
Just like a sign on the road points us to something, so do our bodies; point us to the meaning of life.
Eros
Romantic love, emotional & sexual attraction, building blocks of love.
Storge
Family love.
Philia
Friendship/Brotherly love - Equality.
Agape
Unconditional love - God, sacrificial, it will cost you something, a choice/decision to do good for another person.
Lust
Using someone for their body, taking advantage of them.
Original Sin
When Eve ate the fruit off the tree and went against God’s word.
Original Innocence
Prior to their experience of sin, Adam & Eve had minds, hearts, & bodies that were perfectly innocent.
Original Nakedness
When they were naked without shame, no original sin, trusted each other completely.
Original Unity
They lived in perfect communion and gave themselves to each other through the mutual gift of their bodies.
Concupiscence
The effect of original sin, inclination of evil.
Historical Man
Term given to humanity after the fall from grace until Christ returns.
Sin of pride
The root of all moral evil, also the sin that made Satan & ⅓ of angels fall.
Original Solitude
Adam experienced before Eve, realized he was alone in the visible world as a person, fundamentally different from the animals.
Original Happiness
As a result of their purity of heart, they were able to understand God’s love for them and their ability to love like him.
Spiritualized body
What you and I are now. Body with a soul, made spiritual through our soul (body of matter, soul of an angel).
Glorified body
After Christ returns, holy people will be resurrected and go to heaven.
Good Shame
Concealing your sexual value so others see your personal value & reminds us that we should protect our dignity.
Shamelessness
Flaunting the body without inhibition or conscience, stemming from a false idea of sexual freedom and the truth of the body (forget one's own dignity).
Eschatology
‘End/ final things’ - Death, final judgement, heaven (communion of saints), hell.
Original Man
The term given to humanity before the fall of grace, characterized by immortality, no suffering.
Eschatological Man
3 stages: Before original sin (original man), historical man, glorified bodies (rise from the dead).
Objective Truth
What something is, as it is.
Freedom
To be able to make moral choices, power to do the right thing (love).
Fornication
Biblical term for any sexual act outside of marriage.
Adultery
Cheating on your spouse, sex outside of marriage.
Pornography
It changes your ideas, beliefs, and behavior, increases domestic violence, linked heavily to prostitution, feeds into human trafficking.
Contraception
Deliberately stopping the main purpose of sex (babies) - condoms, birth control, plan B, etc.
Marriage
The unity of man and woman, one-flesh union.
Eschaton
End/ final things.
Masturbation
A part of fornication, a sin, abusing the sexual act that is specifically used for procreation and unity.
Beatific Vision
The attitude means happy, you in heaven seeing God face to face.
Communion of Saints
Those who are in heaven, purgatory, and earth.
Natural Family Planning (NFP)
Natural birth control, during her fertile period there is no sex, serious reason to postpone or space your kids (financial, social, psychological, or physical problems).
Oxytocin
Chemical released during sex or breastfeeding, binds and bonds you to the person.
Resurrection of the body
When Jesus rose and his body was purified.
Divine image
All human beings are made in imago dei.
Abstinence
Abstaining from sex, no to sex same-sex attraction.

Any sexual act that frustrates unitive and procreation.

Chastity
Abstinence from sexual activity for the purpose of waiting for my husband, during marriage you do have sex.

Nuptial (marriage) meaning of the body
The spousal meaning of the body, a person's body by its very nature is supposed to give to the opposite gender.
Purposes of sex
Babies and bonding.
Personalistic Norm
The principle that recognizes that the only proper & adequate attitude towards human persons is love.
Utilitarianism
The philosophy of maximizing pleasure & minimizing pain often at the expense of other people.
Love
Seeing the person for who they are, is giving.
