acute

An injury with sudden onset and short duration.

atrophy

wasting away of tissue or of an organ; decrease in size of a body part or muscle

bending

force on a horizontal beam or bone that places stresses within the structure, causing it to bend or strain

bursae

A bursa is a closed, fluid-filled sac that works as a cushion and gliding surface to reduce friction between tissues of the body. (had to look up)

bursitis

inflammation of bursae at sites of bony prominences between muscle and tendon such as those of the shoulder and knee.

chronic

injury with long onset and long duration.

clonic

alternating involuntary muslce contraction and relaxation in quick succession

closed fracture

the bone breaks but there is no puncture or open wound in the skin.(had to look up)

compression

force that crushes tissue.

contracture

an abnormal and usually permanent contraction of a muscle.(had to look up)

contusion

the action of bruising.(had to look up)

crepits

crackling sound heard during the movement of ends of a broken bone.

deformation

A change from the normal size or shape of an anatomic structure due to mechanical forces that distort an otherwise normal structure.(had to look up)

delayed onset muscle soreness

muscle pain that begins after working out.(had to look this one up)

diastasis

seperation(had to look up)

dislocation

a displacement of a part from its normal position(had to look up)

ecchymosis

black and blue skin discoloration caused by hemorrhage.

edema

swelling as a result of the collection of fluid in connective tissue

elasticity

the tendency of a body to return to its original shape after it has been stretched or compressed(had to look up)

hematoma

A pool of mostly clotted blood that forms in an organ, tissue, or body space(had to look up)

load

outside force or forces acting on the tissue

mechanical failure

elastic limits of tissue are exceeded, causing tissue to break

muscle cramps

a sudden and involuntary contraction of one or more muscles (had to look up)

muscle guarding

he state when muscles are held in a partial state of readiness to act(had to look up)

myositis ossificans

myositis marked by ossification of muscles

neuritis

inflammation of a nerve

neuropraxia

mild injury to a peripheral nerve or nerves(had to look up)

open fracture

The bone pokes through the skin and can be seen, or a deep wound exposes the bone through the skin.(had to look up)

osteoarthritis

chronic disease involving joints in which there is destruction of articular or hyaline cartilage and bony overgrowth.

osteoblasts

bone producing cells.

shearing

force that moves across the parallel organization of the tissue.

sprain

injury to the ligaments around a joint.(had to look up)

stress

the feeling that the motion of a joint is limited or difficult.(had to look up)

subluxation

partial or incomplete dislocation of an articulation.

tendinitis

inflammation of a tendon.

tendinosis

degeneration of the tendon in response to chronic overuse.(had to look up)

tendon

fibrous collagen tissue attaching a muscle to a bone.(had to look up)

tenosynovitis

inflammation of a tendon synovial sheath.

tension

force that pulls or stretches tissue.

tonic

rigid muscle contraction that lasts over a period of time.

torsion

act or state of being twisted.

trauma

a physical injury or wound sustained in sport and produced by an external or internal force.

viscoelastic

any material with dual properties having a fluid's viscosity and elasticity of a gel or a solid.

yield point

elastic limit of tissue.
