What are evidence that supports the theory of evolution
Fossils, biogeography, homologous structures, embryological structures, and molecular homologies.
What are fossils?
Remnants or traces of organisms from past geologic ages embedded in the earth’s crust.
What happens to the complexity of fossils as you dig deeper into the Earth's crust?
The deeper you dig, the simpler the fossils and the fewer are found.
What is an artifact in the context of paleontology?
Something made by humans in the past. It shows human life but is not part of a living thing, so it’s not a fossil.
What does biogeography study?
The worldwide geographical distribution of species.
What are homologous structures?
Structural and functional similarities that indicate evolutionary relationships among species.
What do embryological structures indicate?
They show conservation of homeotic genes.
What are molecular homologies?
Genes, proteins, and protein products shared among organisms inherited from a common ancestor.
What conclusion can be drawn from similar structures in different species?
Similar structures mean similar DNA, which implies similar ancestry.
