Nutritional Counselling
A collaborative, client-centered process using information obtained through systematic assessment to provide strategies that prevent or minimize oral disease and promote overall health.
Process of Care (ADPIE)
The five-step framework used for nutritional counselling consisting of Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation.
Assessment (Nutritional)
The systematic collection of data including health/dental history, vital signs, social/lifestyle history, and extra- and intra-oral examinations to determine the need for counselling.
Diagnosis (Nutritional)
The identification of current or potential risk of oral conditions related to nutrition factors and the determination of what level of counselling is required.
Planning (Nutritional)
Conducting diet analysis, gathering resources, and determining appointment logistics (time and location) to prepare for the counselling session.
Implementation (Nutritional)
The actions, approach, and communication used during the appointment where the dental hygienist applies behaviour change theories and motivational interviewing.
Evaluation (Nutritional)
The assessment of a client's progress towards their goals at an appropriate interval, typically between 6−8 weeks or up to 6 months.
Angular cheilitis
A soft tissue 'clue' found during intra-oral assessment that may indicate a need for nutritional counselling.
Glossitis
Inflammation of the tongue which serves as a clinical clinical indicator/clue for potential nutritional issues.
Xerostomia
Dry mouth, which is an intra-oral finding that could indicate a need for nutritional intervention.
24-hour Diet History
A quick inquiry into eating habits filled out by memory in the reception or operatory; it is not always representative of a typical diet.
3-day Diet History
A diet record that is considered 'better' than a 24-hour inquiry because more observations can be made.
7-day Diet History
The ideal diet record length that allows for many observations, though it requires high client compliance.
Unmet Human Need (UHN)
A component of the Dental Hygiene diagnostic statement used in nutritional planning (e.g., Potential UHN for BSFD).
Direct Communication
An ineffective method where the dental hygienist dictates or tells the client what to do without client participation.
Non-Direct Communication
The most effective method for counselling; a collaborative approach applying motivational interviewing skills where the client helps identify solutions.
Diet Analysis
The assessment of a diet record to evaluate overall nutritional balance, eating behaviours, and the frequency of fermentable carbohydrates.
SMART Goals
Criteria used for client goal-setting: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time Bound.
Fermentable carbohydrates
Dietary components evaluated for frequency and physical consistency during diet analysis to determine caries risk.
Referrals
The process of directing clients with complicated medical histories or specialized diet needs to a physician or dietitian.
