Mental Illness

Social disapproval and rejection based on stereotyped characteristics of a given group, particularly related to mental illness.
Psychological Disorder
A syndrome of symptoms that causes significant disturbance in an individual's mental and social functioning.
Biomedical Model
A theoretical framework that views mental illness as biologically based, often linked to brain health and neurotransmitter function.
Psychological Model
A framework explaining psychological disorders as stemming from mental factors including personality traits, perceptions, and personal experiences.
Sociocultural Model
A perspective that highlights how social and cultural forces shape our understanding of, and experience with, mental illnesses.
Biopsychosocial Model
A complex theoretical model integrating biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors affecting health and illness.

A comprehensive classification system that outlines the categories and features of recognized psychological disorders.
Lifetime Prevalence Rate
The percentage of a population that has experienced any given psychological disorder at some point in their life.
Comorbidity
The occurrence of two or more health conditions, such as psychological disorders, simultaneously in a single individual.
Self-Stigma
The internalization of negative stereotypes associated with mental illness, leading individuals to avoid seeking treatment.
Resilience
The ability to adapt well in the face of adversity, trauma, or stress, often linked to lower levels of psychological disorder symptoms.
Social Support
The perception and actuality of being cared for, valued, and part of a social network that influences mental health outcomes.
Cognitive Biases
Systematic patterns of deviation from norm or rationality in judgment, which can affect perceptions and attitudes towards mental illness.
