Venous cannulas
Devices used to remove deoxygenated blood from the heart, available in 1, 2, or multi-stage options.
Prime
The process of filling the CPB circuit with fluid, usually saline or another solution, before initiation.
Oxygenator
A device that oxygenates venous blood and removes carbon dioxide during CPB.
Centrifugal pump
A type of blood pump used during CPB that is independent of afterload and suitable for long-term use.
Heat exchanger
A component in the CPB circuit that passively cools and actively rewarm the blood.
Coagulation
A process activated by CPB that includes extrinsic and intrinsic hemostatic pathways leading to potential coagulopathies.
ACT (Activated Clotting Time)
A test to monitor coagulation, necessary for ensuring safe anticoagulation levels during CPB.
Embolic events
Complications such as stroke, TIA, or memory deficits that can arise post-CPB due to dislodged clots.
“Hot shot”
A terminal warm reperfusion cardioplegia solution administered as the aortic cross clamp is removed.
Protamine administration
The process of administering protamine to neutralize heparin after bypass, necessary to reverse anticoagulation.
