monomer
monomer = are the smaller units from which larger molecules are made.
examples of monomer + polymer
monomer = monosaccharide, amino acids, nucleotides
polymer = starch , proteins, DNA (polymer)
condensation reaction
polymer are formed via. condensation reaction
water is released: - H from one monomer, - OH from another monomer
a chemical bond forms bet. monomers → creates a covalent bond, linking monomers
reaction summary: monomer + monomer = polymer + H2O
Examples: formation of a disaccharides from 2 monosaccharide
hydrolysis reaction
polymers are broken down via. hydrolysis reaction
opposite of a condensation reaction
a water molecule is used to break the bond bet. monomers
reaction summary: polymer + H2O = monomer + monomer
example: digestion of starch to glucose
polymer
polymer = are molecules made from a large number of monomers joined together.
