Facilitating immune responses

• Fluid containing fluid proteins, fats, immune cells

• Moves from surrounding cells into lymphatic capillaries → lymphatic vessel → lymph nodes → lymphatic trunks → and into blood circulatory sys.

lymphatic capillaries

• vessels which transport and filter lymph (lymphatic fluid)

• found in dermis of skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, and joints

lymphatic vessels

• afferent: carry lymph into lymph node

• efferent: carry lymph out of lymph node into lymphatic trunks

lymph nodes

• Responsible for filtering lymph, removing bacteria

• superficial: found within the Subcutaneous layer

• deep: found everywhere within the body

lymphatic trunks

• Large vessels formed from the efferent lymphatic vessels

• Carry lymph into the lymphatic ducts and finally into the blood circulatory system

primary lymphatic organs

• provide environment for stem cells to divide & mature into B and T lymphocytes

Secondary lymphatic organs & tissues

• site where most immune responses occur
