Refers to the places where people live.
Examples of settlements
One off rural housing, small villages, urban areas such as towns and cities.

The actual land a settlement is built on.
Why are most settlements built on flat or gently sloping land?
There's a risk of mass movement on steep slopes and its also much more difficult and expensive to build on.
What is the typical altitude for settlement in Ireland?
In Ireland most settlement occurs in lowland areas (less than 200m above sea level).
Why do settlements favor lowland areas?
Here, the land is more fertile, the weather is more settled and transport links are better.
Why did many settlements in the past develop beside rivers?
Useful for water + transport.
What areas do modern rural settlements avoid?
Floodplains + poorly drained area (deranged drainage, lots of surface water, marsh, bog).
