In a VOR, what two signals are compared, and how are they modulated?

Signals: Reference signal and Variable signal

Modulation:

  • One is AM (amplitude modulated)

  • The other is FM (frequency modulated)

The phase difference between these two tells the receiver which radial the aircraft is on.
