8 Characterisitics of Life

All livings are :

  • Made of Cells

  • Have DNA

  • Reproduce

  • Grow and Develop

  • Use and obtain energy

  • Evolve over time

  • Maintain homeostasis

  • Respond to their environment

New cards

All Living things are made up of Cells

Pigs’ tissues+organs are composed of cells and specialized cells make up specific organs in a pig such as heart cells, kidney cells.

3
New cards

All living things are based off of a genetic code

Every cell in the pig's body contains a complete set of DNA in its nucleus, directing the construction of its anatomy, from skin color to organ placement.

4
New cards

All living things grow and develop

Through mitosis cells multiply and grow the body making the pig’s skeleton and muscles grow into adulthood. In the fetus pig grows off of the nutrients obtain from the placenta in the mother’s womb, while regular pigs obtain nutrients through food to provide the cells ATP to go through mitosis and grow.

5
New cards

All living things metabolisize (obtain and use energy)

Organs like the stomach and intestines help break down food and asborb nutrients obtained from the food and the toxins are turned into waste.

6
New cards

All living things maintain an internal temperature/environment (homeostasis)

The kidneys and liver help filtrate and excommune toxins and keep the blood isotonic for blood cells. Pancreas regulates blood sugar levels and produces insulin to maintain an ideal internal environment.

  • The heart also pumps blood to maintain homeostasis throughout the body to maintain proper circulation.

7
New cards

All Living things Respond to Stimuli

The pig’s heart responds to anaerobic activity pumping more oxidated blood throught the pig’s body to the muscles for energy. Trachea also expands to take in more air into the the body. Sensory organs like the pig’’s ear, tongue and eyes also respond to stimuli in its outside environment to react.

8
New cards

All living things evolve

Pigs have evolved to adapt their stomach and intestine system to different sources and omnivorous diet of scraps, meat as they were domesticated to farms. Liver and kidney system also evolved to accomodate and filter toxins for a wide ranged diet to prevent sickness.
