V | Developing Follicle | Follicle growth/maturation — the follicle enlarges and produces more estrogen. |
W | Mature (Graafian) follicle | Final follicle maturation — the egg is fully mature and ready to be released. |
X | Ovum (egg) | Ovulation — the mature egg is released from the ovary. |
Y | Corpus luteum | Corpus luteum formation — the empty follicle turns into the corpus luteum and releases progesterone to maintain the uterine lining. |
Z | Ovary | Site where egg development and hormone production occur. |
