Primer

The primer is a small metal cup containing an explosive compound. Heat sensitive and presure sensitive. When struck a small explosion occurs to ignite the powder.

A nitro cellulose powder.The powder burns creatin expanding gasses. This creates a pressure build up that will push the bullet down the barrel out towards the target.

A brass, steel or copper cylinder closed at one end. its function is to hold all the other components together. it is the only component that can be reused.

The bullet usually made up of lead covered with a copper jacket. The bullet is the only componenet that leaves the barrel and strikes the target

cartridge firing sequence

Squeezing the trigger causes the firingg pin to strike the primer. the primer explodes, sending a flash (flame) into the case. The flame ignites the powder. The powder burns creating a pressure build up behind the bullet. This pressure build up will push the bullet down the barrel and out towards the target.

how to identify a cratridge calibre

There is writing on the bottom of the cartridge that is known as a headstamp. The headstamp will provide the calibre for that particular cartridge. Calibre is the diameter of the bullet/ the diameter of the inside of the barrel in which the bullet must travel.
