1
New cards

Select one of the sources you used and explain why you chose this source to include in your project.

I chose Source 1 (Smithsonian NMAAHC) because it focuses specifically on the 1970s Bronx hip-hop movement. This was essential for bridging the gap between historical Black cultural movements and modern pop culture, as it explicitly connects music to modern style trends like streetwear and sneakers.

2
New cards

Identify the source that most deepened your understanding of your topic and explain in what way it added depth to your understanding of your topic.

Source 3 (JSTOR) deepened my understanding the most. While other sources gave narrative histories, this academic source added depth by providing research backed evidence on how localized community styles like specific hairstyles and sneaker culture systematically transitioned into global luxury trends.

3
New cards

Explain how excluding one of your sources would have weakened your argument.

Excluding Source 2 (Library of Congress) would have severely weakened my argument. Without it, my project would only look at modern styles like hip-hop and streetwear, making it seem like Black cultural influence is a recent phenomenon. Excluding it would remove the vital historical proof that this influence has been shaping American trends for generations, starting back in the 1920s.

4
New cards

Explain how you determined that one of your sources is reliable.

I determined Source 1 to be reliable because it is published by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. As a leading, nationally recognized museum and research institution, its content undergoes rigorous vetting by professional historians and curators before being published.

5
New cards

Identify which of your sources is the most persuasive and explain why it is so persuasive

Source 4 (Dapper Dan) is the most persuasive because it is a primary source autobiography. Hearing a firsthand account from a designer who actually lived through the era and personally innovated the blend of street style and luxury fashion makes the argument undeniable and emotionally compelling in a way that usual textbook reports can’t replicate.

6
New cards

Identify the source that was most important to your research topic and explain its importance.

Source 1 (Smithsonian NMAAHC) was the most important because it addresses both halves of my research question simultaneously. It lays the groundwork for how a musical movement (hip-hop) directly birthed a massive fashion movement (streetwear and oversized clothing), serving as the central anchor for my entire thesis.

7
New cards

Explain why the four sources you selected, compared to other sources you considered but did not select, are the best for supporting your argument.

The four selected sources are the best because they represent a mix of historical eras and diverse medium types (museum exhibits, government archives, academic journals, and primary memoirs). The other sources I considered were too narrow, while these four perfectly connect music and fashion across a full century.

8
New cards

Describe the most important source of information you found while conducting your research, and explain why it was important to your research process.

The most important source found was Source 4 (Dapper Dan). In my research process, it acted as a real world case study. It allowed me to test whether the broad claims made by the museum and academic sources about "Black cultural influence" were true on an individual, practical level within the fashion industry.

9
New cards

Describe which of the various perspectives you explored was most difficult for you to incorporate into your project, and explain why this was the case.

Source 3 (JSTOR) was the most difficult to incorporate. Unlike the narrative stories of hip-hop or Dapper Dan's life, the scholarly article analyzed fashion trends through structural research, which forced me to carefully translate its academic ideas into a narrative that matched my other sources.

10
New cards

Explain how two of your sources provide different perspectives on an aspect of your topic.

Source 3 (JSTOR) and Source 4 (Dapper Dan) look at luxury fashion from entirely different angles. Source 3 provides an objective, detached academic perspective tracking global fashion trends while Source 4 provides a personal perspective from an individual creator fighting for recognition within the industry.

11
New cards

Explain how two of your sources provide similar perspectives on an aspect of your topic.

Source 1 (Smithsonian) and Source 3 (JSTOR) share a similar perspective on modern streetwear. Both sources view streetwear not just as a random clothing trend, but as an intentional, community driven cultural expression that originated directly within African American neighborhoods before integrating into the mainstream market.

12
New cards

Explain why one of your sources is more convincing than another.

Source 4 (Dapper Dan) is more convincing than Source 3 (JSTOR) regarding the intersection of street style and high fashion. While Source 3 asserts that these styles became popular worldwide, Source 4 gives concrete proof of how a Black designer manually screen printed luxury logos onto street styles, making the conceptual argument evident.

13
New cards

Explain why one of your sources is more reliable than another.

Source 2 (Library of Congress) is more reliable than Source 3 (JSTOR) regarding historical timelines. As a federal institution and the official research library of the United States, the Library of Congress serves as a national archive, giving its historical documentation of the Harlem Renaissance the highest level of foundational authority.

14
New cards

Explain how a combination of two of your sources strengthened your argument.

Combining Source 1 (Smithsonian) and Source 2 (Library of Congress) strengthened my argument by establishing continuity. Source 2 proves that Black cultural influence shaped American style in the 1920s and Source 1 shows it happening again with hip-hop in the 1970s. Together, they prove this influence is a continuous, long term pattern rather than a temporary trend.

15
New cards

Explain how a combination of two of your sources added depth or insight to your understanding of your topic.

Combining Source 1 (Smithsonian) and Source 4 (Dapper Dan) added depth by showing the relationship between a movement and an individual. Source 1 gave me the broad context of how hip-hop music and fashion evolved together in the Bronx while Source 4 provided the specific insight of how a single designer in Harlem weaponized that exact cultural energy to disrupt the luxury fashion industry.

16
New cards

Describe any lack of agreement or contradictory information you found as you did your research. Explain what this lack of agreement or contradiction revealed about your topic.

While there was no direct contradiction about whether African American culture influenced fashion, there was a clear tension regarding how that influence was treated. Academic and museum sources framed the spread of these styles as a successful "evolution into mainstream culture," whereas Source 4 revealed the harsher reality of mainstream luxury brands initially pushing back against or copying Black designers before finally adopting them. This revealed that the topic involves complex issues of cultural appropriation and commercialization.

17
New cards

Describe one piece of information you learned from a source you used in your project that was not included in your classroom instruction.

I learned the specific history of Dapper Dan from Source 4. While classroom instruction covered the broad social and economic impacts of the Harlem Renaissance and the birth of Hip-Hop, learning how an independent Harlem designer actively forced the luxury fashion industry to change its design philosophy was entirely new to me.

18
New cards

Describe one piece of information you learned from a source you used in your project that adds to information you learned in your classroom instruction.

Classroom instruction taught us that the Harlem Renaissance was a major turning point for Black literature and jazz music. Source 2 (Library of Congress) added to this by detailing how the movement also fundamentally reshaped everyday American "social style" and fashion aesthetics, expanding my understanding of the era's complete cultural reach.

19
New cards

Explain how the research you conducted connects to a topic from the course in ways that you did not know or expect until after you had completed your research.

I expected to find that music and fashion were independent areas of study. However, my research revealed a deep connection to the course themes of community resistance and cultural preservation. I did not expect to learn that fashion like oversized clothing or customized streetwear was used by Black communities as a deliberate tool for self-expression and identity assertion when mainstream spaces ignored them.

20
New cards

Explain how the research you conducted revealed additional questions or insights about your topic.

My research brought forward a significant insight which was that styles originating in Black communities frequently faced criticism or were labeled "counter-culture" at first, but later became multi-billion dollar global trends. This revealed additional questions about the economics of fashion like: How are Black creators compensated or credited when luxury brands adopt styles born from Black street culture?

21
New cards

Explain why you were initially interested in this topic and how well your research aligned with what you expected to learn about your topic.

I was initially interested in this topic because of my personal love for modern streetwear and hip-hop music, and I wanted to know where these trends actually came from. My research aligned perfectly with my expectation that hip-hop created modern streetwear, but it went far beyond what I expected by showing that this fashion and music connection really goes all the way back to the jazz culture of the 1920s and the Harlem Renaissance.
