Effective listening
A process that consists of five components: receiving, attending, understanding, responding, and recalling.
Receiving
The first component of effective listening mentioned in the chapter notes.
Attending
The second component of the effective listening process.
Understanding
A component of effective listening; in the provided example, a lack of this led to an inability to properly respond to a coworker.
Responding
The component of effective listening that involves reacting to the speaker; it cannot be done properly without understanding.
Recalling
The final component of the effective listening process listed in the chapter.
Active listening
A skill set that helps create more positive and respectful conversations and prevents being set only on one's own ideas.
Cultural differences
In the personal encounter described, these were the root cause of a listening failure between an older coworker and someone suggesting a technological approach.
