French (Fr)
The external diameter of a catheter.
Urinary catheterization
A sterile aseptic procedure.
Urinary catheter care
A clean procedure performed every 8 hours.
Dorsal recumbent
The patient position while inserting a urinary catheter in a female.
Supine
The patient position while inserting a urinary catheter in a male.
Silicon urinary catheter
Used for long-term care; can be used for >12weeks (90days).
Self-retaining catheters
Examples include the Foley's catheter and Malecot catheter.
Pressure Ulcer
Also known as Decubitus ulcer or bedsores.
BRADEN RISK ASSESSMENT SCALE
A common scale used to assess the risk of developing pressure ulcers.
Stage 1 Pressure Ulcer
Involves the epidermis only, presenting with intact skin and nonblanchable erythema.
Stage 2 Pressure Ulcer
Involves the epidermis and dermis with characteristic features of serous fluid-filled blisters and skin breakdown.
Stage 4 Pressure Ulcer
Involves epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous tissues, muscle, ligament, and tendon up to the bone.
Unstageable Pressure Ulcer
A wound covered with slough and eschar that makes categorization between stage 3 and 4 difficult.
Deep Tissue Injury
Damage to underlying tissue due to high friction with intact superficial skin and maroon/bluish discoloration.
Adult Pulse Site (CPR)
Carotid artery accessed for 5-10 seconds.
Infant Pulse Site (CPR)
Brachial artery.
Depth of chest compression (Adult/Child)
5cm (2inch); maximum for adults is 6cm (2.4inch).
Rate of chest compression
100−120cpm
Ratio of chest compression (Multiple rescuers child/infant)
15:2
Shockable Rhythm
Includes Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) and Pulseless Ventricular Tachycardia (PVT).
Nonshockable rhythm
Includes Asystole and Pulseless electrical activity (PEA).
5 H's
Hypoxia, Hypokalemia/Hyperkalemia, Hydrogen ion (Acidosis), Hypovolemia, and Hypothermia.
5 T's
Tension pneumothorax, Cardiac tamponade, Toxins, Coronary thrombosis, and Pulmonary thrombosis.
