What is Homeostasis?

Is the process by which body maintains a stable internal environment, even when external conditions change

Stimulus

A change in the internal or external environment that affects the system

• Increase in body temperature or rise in blood sugar

Receptor

A structure that detects the stimulus and sends information to the control center

• Nerve endings in the skin or glucose-sensing cells in the pancreas

Control Center

The part of the system that processes information from receptors and determines the response

• Hypothalamus or pancreas

Effector

A muscle, organ, or gland that carries out the instructions from the control center

• Sweat glands, liver or blood vessels

Response

The action taken by the effector to counteract the stimulus and restore balance

• Sweating to cool the body or cells absorbing glucose to lower blood sugar
